For drivers training and planning to test in an automatic-transmission Class A CMV.

FREE THEORY CLASSES INCLUDED: The applicable HazardCue ELDT online theory class or classes are included with this BTW package at no additional cost.

Included in this First-Time Class A package

  • CDL Class A ELDT Online Theory + final theory assessment (80% minimum passing score)
  • Hazmat (H) ELDT Online Theory + final theory assessment for drivers seeking a first-time H endorsement
  • Tanker (N) Endorsement DMV Knowledge-Test Preparation + practice questions (test preparation; N is not an ELDT endorsement)
  • Traveling Instructor range training and public-road training
  • Complete pre-trip inspection training, including identification and explanation of tractor, trailer, coupling, steering, suspension, brake, tire/wheel, lighting, emergency-equipment, and other testable components
  • Air-brake system knowledge and hands-on air-brake checks, including compressor/governor, reservoirs, warning devices, spring brakes, service brakes, air-loss checks, and proper test sequence for the training vehicle
  • Coupling and uncoupling
  • Straight-line backing, offset backing, alley/docking, sight-side parallel parking and blind-side parallel parking
  • Trailer tandem sliding and positioning, including releasing/locking pins, safe repositioning, axle-weight effects, and confirming the tandems are fully locked before travel
  • Turns, lane changes, shifting/transmission operation, highway/controlled-access driving, railroad crossings, speed/space management and hazard recognition
  • All HazardCue curriculum books, training guides, checklists, evaluation sheets, progress logs, and training supplies
  • Final BTW proficiency evaluation and applicable FMCSA training completion record/reporting

Additional BTW instruction after the included 120 hours, when needed to reach proficiency: $125/hour.

How the First-Time Class A Program Works

Online theory: Student completes the HazardCue Class A ELDT online theory and passes the final theory assessment.

Traveling BTW: HazardCue comes to the approved training location and provides range and public-road instruction in the exact customer-supplied Class A tractor-trailer the student will use for the official CDL skills test.

Proficiency: BTW completion is based on the driver's demonstrated proficiency in the required skills. Federal ELDT rules do not impose a minimum BTW hour requirement.

Skills test: After applicable ELDT requirements are completed and the CLP has been held for the required period, the student takes the official CDL skills test with an authorized examiner. The official CDL skills test is separate from the HazardCue package.

DMV: After passing the official skills test and meeting state requirements, the driver completes the CDL issuance process with the licensing agency.

HazardCue's 8-week/120-hour and 4-week/60-hour structures are HazardCue program packages, not federal minimum-hour requirements. A student's actual successful BTW completion depends on proficiency in all required curriculum elements.

Before BTW begins: HazardCue will confirm the training schedule, approved location, commercial vehicle, registration/insurance, and required driver credentials. A valid CLP is required before applicable behind-the-wheel driving begins.
