Data Center Safety Awareness

A safety course built only for data centers — the buildings that hold the computer servers everything runs on. Every lesson is about a data center system: the power chain, the battery plant, the cooling plant, and the server halls — and the hazards that come with that exact system.

Who it is for

Data center employees and the contractors who work in live data center buildings.

Awareness level: this course teaches workers to recognize the hazards of each data center system and work safely around it. It does not qualify anyone to perform electrical work or other licensed trades work. Take it online, at your own pace, on a phone, tablet, or computer — your progress saves as you go.

The 14 lessons

1

Inside a Mission-Critical Building

What "mission-critical" means, the white space and the support spaces, and the one rule over everything: never take a live load down.

2

The Power Chain — How a Data Center Stays Powered

Street power to switchgear to battery backup to the racks — and why "turned off" rarely means dead.

3

Electrical Rooms — Switchgear, PDUs, and Busway

Arc flash in plain words, and who may — and may never — touch the gear.

4

The Battery Plant — UPS Rooms

Stored energy, acid, and gas in one room: lead-acid and lithium-ion battery strings.

5

Generators and the Yard

Automatic starts, diesel and fuel systems, exhaust, and load-bank test days.

6

Locking Out Critical Equipment

Lockout/tagout where dual feeds, batteries, and automatic restarts make "off" hard to prove.

7

The Cooling Plant

Chillers, air handlers, cooling towers, and refrigerants — one system stacking electrical, chemical, height, and confined-space hazards.

8

Water — The Data Center's Worst Enemy

Leak detection, condensate, and what to do when water shows up near live power.

9

Working in the White Space

Hot and cold aisles, raised floors, overhead busway, and dust control over live racks.

10

Racking and Stacking — Moving Servers and Racks

Server lifts, tipping, and planned routes — racks move on machines, or they do not move.

11

Fire Detection and Suppression in a Data Center

Early smoke detection, clean-agent gas, and the emergency power off button.

12

Change Control — How Work Gets Approved in a Live Building

Written procedures (MOPs, SOPs, EOPs) and energized work permits: no paper, no touch.

13

Confined Spaces in Data Centers

Cooling tower basins, fuel tanks, and vaults — no permit in your hand, no entry, ever.

14

Emergencies and Reporting in a Live Facility

Alarms, discharges, leaks, getting out of a secured building, and stop-work authority.
